2024 SOCMA Summit Focuses on Strategic Planning and Industry Evolution
The 2024 SOCMA Summit & Annual Conference, held on October 29-30 at the Emeline Hotel in Charleston, SC, brought together leaders from the specialty and fine chemicals industry to discuss critical trends and strategic planning under the theme “Predictions & Planning.”
Day One Highlights: Future-Focused Leadership
The summit opened with a compelling keynote from Michael Rogers, author and former Futurist-in-Residence at The New York Times, who delivered a thought-provoking analysis of how AI, robotics, and workforce trends are transforming manufacturing. “Going to the future is like going upwind—you have to zigzag to get there,” Rogers emphasized, urging companies to align their strategic decisions with evolving trends. His presentation explored how the business landscape will evolve over the next decade, particularly emphasizing the challenges companies face with the emerging workforce while balancing innovation with day-to-day operations. Rogers challenged attendees to consider what strategic “zigzags” their companies are making to adapt and thrive in this shifting landscape.
In a timely second keynote, former U.S. Congressman David Jolly addressed the uncertainties in the political landscape and their implications for specialty chemical companies. “The specialty chemical manufacturing industry has an optimistic future—no matter the election outcome,” Jolly assured attendees while providing a detailed analysis of potential policy shifts and regulatory scenarios. This session was particularly relevant given the approaching election cycle and its potential impact on industry regulations.
One of the day’s standout sessions featured VanDeMark Chemical’s success story with a Department of Defense contract, highlighting new opportunities in government contracting for critical chemical production. This presentation, delivered by CEO Boudewijn van Lent alongside Marta Pazos from the Department of Defense, offered valuable insights into navigating federal procurement processes.
Critical Industry Discussions
The afternoon featured parallel tracks addressing crucial industry concerns:
- A detailed analysis of expiring pro-growth tax policies in 2025
- The implications of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Chevron Deference
- An executive-only fishbowl discussion on issues impacting the specialty chemical manufacturing industry
- Focused sessions on M&A trends, trade tariffs, and manufacturing operations
The first day concluded with SOCMA’s Safety Recognition Dinner, where 25 member companies were celebrated for their excellence in safety performance.
Day Two: Future-Focused Solutions
The second day opened with SOCMA’s Annual Business Meeting, where President & CEO Jennifer Abril and Board Chair Kate Donahue delivered updates on Vision 2030 initiatives and the State of the Association. Members also confirmed the 2027 Class of Governors and new Executive Committee, setting SOCMA’s strategic direction for the years ahead.
The day’s sessions then centered on emerging opportunities and challenges in the industry. A significant focus was placed on biomanufacturing trends, with speakers from BioReNuva and Colonial Chemical sharing insights on sustainable supply chains and market evolution.
The workforce development session addressed a critical industry challenge: the projected 2 million unfilled manufacturing jobs by 2033. Colonial Chemical’s Executive VP of Operations, Doug Wynn, shared their successful community college partnership program, offering a blueprint for other companies facing similar recruitment challenges.
Global Perspective
The summit concluded with a comprehensive look at global sourcing shifts affecting North American specialty chemical manufacturing, featuring insights from industry leaders at Cambrex, Advent International, and WeylChem US. The presentation of the 2025 Contract Manufacturing Outlook Survey provided valuable data for future planning.
Industry Representation
The summit drew an impressive array of attendees from over 70 companies, including major players like Ashland, Baker Hughes Company, and Milliken & Company, demonstrating the event’s significance in the specialty chemicals sector. The diversity of participating companies reflected the industry’s breadth, from manufacturers and suppliers to consultants and legal experts.
Looking Ahead
The 2024 SOCMA Summit successfully addressed the industry’s most pressing challenges while providing actionable insights for future planning. The focus on emerging trends, regulatory changes, and workforce development highlighted the industry’s proactive approach to addressing future challenges while maintaining competitive advantages in an evolving global market.
