Port Arthur Lands ISCC Certification to Pave Exciting New Chapter in Sustainable Products

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – In an era where sustainability is driving major evolutions in the manufacturing industry, staying on top of market demands is not only important, it’s also a necessity. Fortunately, the Port Arthur team is taking this commitment a step further, putting the site at the forefront of sustainable products with a certification that will address a need many U.S. businesses have yet to realize.

Drawing inspiration from our European counterparts at Kallo, we’ve recently completed a pivotal ISCC Certification that will help us achieve our goal to meet an emerging market need for sustainable products for the new Monument Renewables & Fuels business. The certification verifies an effort to reduce Greenhouse Gases (GHG) and establish sustainable production through fully traceable supply chains.

“Seeing the impact occurring already in Europe, we recognized the developing need to produce sustainable products here in the U.S.,” Umair Virani, Commercial Director, Monument Renewables & Fuels explained.  “We’re not just looking at Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) specifically, but sustainability as a whole, encompassing all kinds of circular economy products that can help our market.

“Throughout the process, we not only took advantage of the blueprint the Kallo team had already created, but also recruited their help in the preparation for the audit — in addition to some team members from Monument Brandenburg. It was a truly collaborative approach,” Sarves Peri, VP, Business Leader Monument Renewables and Fuels, added.

Given that Monument is leading the way with ISCC certifications in the US, the audit itself was unique in that it had to prove the capabilities of a process that wasn’t currently being used. That meant the team had to demonstrate a next-level understanding of every aspect of the sustainability journey — from GHG calculations to chain of custody declarations.

“Every time a product changes hands, it requires a sustainability declaration, communicating what the current carbon footprint is,” Blake Saffer, Global Quality Leader, shared.

“We have to be able to calculate and convey the GHGs we add during our processes to those from upstream. We worked hand-in-hand with the Kallo team to understand how to look at mass balances, verify incoming declarations, and issue the outgoing sustainability declarations, while gathering all the raw data needed to prove our ability to do GHG calculations accurately. A GHG expert from our Brandenburg team contributed to temperature and flow readings, and boiler efficiency to ensure all calculations are conducted to ISCC standards. And this is all in addition to their daily job responsibilities!”

As a result of a successful audit, the Port Arthur team is now ISCC certified in three areas:

  1. ISCC EU (Sustainability certification for Biofuels)
  2. ISCC CORSIA (Sustainability certification for SAF)
  3. ISCC PLUS (Sustainability certification for biogenic and circular products)

Despite an official kick off in December 2023, and the audit in early April 2024, these efforts are all part of a much longer journey and continuous investments in the plant since it joined the Monument family in 2021.

“The success of this audit represents more than just a routine certification process; it marks an exciting opportunity to see all of our hard work and investments over the last three years really pay off,” Ian Quinn, Port Arthur Site Manager, explained. “We’ll not only be able to serve as a direct line for our current SAF customers to the Canadian market, but also open up a lot of new pathways through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in working with these molecules to serve more customers.

“Over the last three years, we’ve made significant investments into every aspect of the facility, revamping all Process and Quality management systems to bring the infrastructure up to Monument standards. All of these upgrades have helped us along the journey to get to where we are today, and we’re now at a point where we can start taking advantage of the hard work.”

This certification and our ability to produce more SAF is an important step in supporting our customers and expanding our portfolio in exciting new ways. Monument is excited to help more domestic and international airlines reduce their carbon intensive fuels and play our part in creating a more sustainable future for everyone.
