SOCMA Statement on Delay of CFATS Reauthorization
Arlington, VA – As a member of the Chemical Security Coalition, SOCMA urges the Senate to expeditiously pass H.R. 4470, the Protecting and Securing Chemical Facilities from Terrorist Attacks Act of 2023. The Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS) program sunsets today, July 27, 2023.
The Department of Homeland Security, which administers CFATS, and industry have worked diligently for many years to cultivate relationships that enhance the security and resilience of America’s chemical facilities. Chemical enterprises are significant contributors to the American economy and are at the forefront of the development and implementation of robust risk management practices.
The coalition applauds the House’s overwhelming passage (409 to 1) of H.R. 4470 on Tuesday. However, Congress must pass this important CFATS renewal legislation before the program sunsets today.
